Toxicity: Toxic, produces dermatitis; vapor (see chlorine ) attacks mucous membranes producing pulmonary edema.
Summary: Not found free in nature, but as various iodides. Iodine volatilizes when moderately heated to a purple gas. Iodine is necessary for proper thyroid function. Lack of it causes goiter. A small amount of potassium iodide (KI) is added to table salt to deliver dietary iodine. Tincture of iodine used as an antiseptic is a solution of iodine and KI in alcohol.
